Palau's Culture
small text
large text
Palau's culture is most unique for its matrilineal and matriarchal emphasis. Women are responsible for choosing local chiefs (and hold the power to repeal their title!) and a person's community standing is decided upon by his relationship with his mother's family. Women are also responsible for preserving the Palauan culture which includes a number of traditional activities, including weaving, wood carving, canoe building and dancing.
