Lauren is a 15-year-old girl whose paleontologist father mysteriously disappeared on a fossil expedition in the Canadian Badlands a year ago. She is the only person who hasn't accepted his death, which causes a lot of friction between Lauren and her mother, Dr. Hillary Slayton, who is also a paleontologist. While Lauren begrudgingly works at the Dinosaur Explorer Camp her mother runs, she encounters a live, seemingly intelligent dinosaur she names Eno. As they become close, Lauren realizes that Eno may be the key to finding out the truth about her father. It isn't going to be easy, though, as she must keep Eno a secret from everyone but her closest friends at camp for fear that he will be captured and possibly harmed. In addition, Eno is being tracked by a pair of dinosaurs named the Diggers who plan to kill him.

Eno is an intelligent, evolved teenage dinosaur. His ancestors were the dromaeosaurs, which were members of the raptor family. We are introduced to Eno right after he emerges from an opening in the earth's surface that immediately closes. He's frightened but is also very curious, which leads him to meet Lauren and become her friend. Though he is safe with Lauren, he finds out that is not the case with all humans. Eno is also aware of the Diggers who are tracking him so that they can destroy him. He hates loud, high-pitched sounds because they hurt his ears. Eno misses his parents and never stops hoping he will find them.

Kit is one of the returning camp counselors at Dinosaur Explorer Camp. A Native American, Kit is good-natured, resourceful and always up for an adventure. Early circumstances lead him to become Lauren's trusted confidant in her search for her father and protecting Eno. When they find themselves in real trouble, Kit reaches out to his Uncle Ten Bears, a native elder. But a suspicious finding causes Lauren to be wary of Ten Bears, leading Kit to decide what he will do next.

Courtney is Lauren's best friend. While dinosaurs are not even remotely interesting to her, she knows Lauren is hurting from her dad's disappearance and wants to support her. Part-valley girl/part-fashion plate, this teen became a camp counselor because she does have a big heart. Courtney has decided that Lauren and Chris will make a cute couple, a development that would definitely give Lauren something good to think about. At the same time, she has set her eyes on Kit; however, things may turn out quite differently than Courtney would have ever suspected.

Chris is the head counselor at camp. An accomplished high school student and athlete, he needs to earn a scholarship to attend college. He is a by-the-book counselor who believes in following the rules first and then having fun. Despite his good intentions, Chris ends up in some interesting situations as he tries to do everything perfectly. He has a definite interest in Lauren and is completely frustrated by Courtney, but even his personal life doesn't work out exactly as he plans.

Danielle (nicknamed "Danny") is sister to Nelson, and they are textbook competing siblings attending camp. They are young, persistent and annoying dino experts in training who want to know everything about dinosaurs. Danny is particularly good with details and early on determines that the counselors are hiding a very big secret. Her quick wit and energy result in numerous headaches for Lauren as they get closer to the truth.

Nelson is brother to Danielle whom he squabbles with on a regular basis. However, they do agree that there is something going on in camp that may have to do with real dinosaurs. Nelson may not be as sharp as Danny, but he provides a lot of the fun and is a solid detective as they work hard to unravel the mystery. He is also happy to have been selected by Dr. Aikens to work on dinosaur research even after Danielle's suspicions are aroused about Dr. Aikens.

Dr. Clive Aikens is a fellow paleontologist and an old friend of both of Lauren's parents. Ostensibly, he has come to camp to help Dr. Slayton now that she is running the camp alone while he continues research on his book. However, serious questions begin to emerge as he seems much more interested in the possibility of real living dinosaurs as he tries to keep tabs on Lauren, even enlisting Nelson and Danny under the guise of research to help him in his murky plan. Meanwhile, Lauren is suspicious of his motives toward her mother. She doesn't want him as a stepfather!

Ten Bears is Kit's uncle. He is also the native shaman charged by his tribe to watch for the return of the dinosaurs whose existence has been known to them for many generations. He has a good relationship with his nephew, but wishes he took more of an interest in their traditions. Known as a gatekeeper, Ten Bears realizes that the minor quakes in the Canadian Badlands are the first warning of an opening in the earth that could become a passageway for more dinosaurs to emerge on the surface. He knows that he must be ready to protect both species — human and dinosaur — if need be.

Dr. Hillary Slayton is a paleontologist, like her lost husband Alan, and Lauren's mother. She loves her daughter but finds herself in conflict with her, especially over the loss of Alan. She is trying to help Lauren accept that Alan is gone. She is handling her grief by keeping busy running the Dinosaur Explorer Camp that she and Alan created and ran together. She is happy to host Clive Aikens for the summer, even with Lauren's obvious dislike of him. She looks forward to his sharing of duties running the camp until he arouses a few too many questions.

The Diggers are predatory dinosaurs who are hunting Eno so that humans won't use him to find their underground world. They are descended from ornithopods and, unlike teenage Eno, are fully mature adults. Their use of their huge claws to dig inside caves leads Lauren to call them Diggers. She names one of them Sarrepta, after a girl she didn't like in her school, and the other Green Eye, because he has green eyes. Sarrepta is the brains while Green Eye is a bit clumsy. They are devoted to each other, though. Bright lights hurt their eyes and they really like eating fungus and grubs. They have a keen interest in tools and weaponry as they believe that someday the dinosaurs will return and rule the world.
