Puzzles
Puzzle play encourages cognitive skills such as visual-spatial reasoning
and cause-and-effect reasoning, which are especially important for
developing understanding of abstract ideas in math and art.
Concepts and Skills:
Visual discrimination
Recognition of cause-and-effect
Belief in Themselves
Paz acknowledges that puzzles can be hard, and offers the suggestion of
"starting small." The ability to set realistic goals for oneself can be
practiced when making choices so that a positive gaming outcome can help
to deliver confidence. Paz also encourages a child to feel proud of
trying hard.
Persistence
Paz encourages and facilitates the puzzle-building experience with
suggestions and feedback if the child's attempts fail. The ability to
persevere when things don't go right the first time is a critical
learning skill. A child can learn that mistakes are a part of learning
-- one can learn what doesn't work or what not to do through mistakes.
Problem-Solving
Paz helps the preschooler to understand the multiple steps involved in a
game. These steps include trying something else if what you do doesn't
work and how to tell if you're succeeding.
