Splatter Curtains

There are a couple of different options for making "splatter curtains," so choose the one that sounds the most fun to you.

Materials:

Curtains (see the different styles we've listed and decide which way you want to go)
Paintbrushes
Dropcloth or plastic to lay under the curtains
Thread (if you are going to sew your curtains)
Regular needles
Canvas needle (if you are going to make canvas curtains)
Sewing pins
A few small cans of paint

Note: This is a great way to get rid of any leftover house paint. On this project we used interior latex water-based paint. Acrylic paints from a craft and art-supply store will also give you an array of rich colors ... however, both may fade somewhat with washing. You can also use fabric paints sold at craft and art-supply stores, which may hold up better to washing.

Step by Step

You can make "splatter curtains" a couple of ways, so we're going to list the different methods. Choose the method you are most comfortable with.

Easy:
Buy the curtains you want to paint from a store. (skip to step 4)

Medium:
Use a set of old or new twin sheets. The end with the trim will be the bottom of the curtain. (go to step 1)

Hard:
Purchase canvas from a hardware or fabric store. (go to step 1)

Step 1

Discuss with your parents where you can work on your project.

Measure the window where you will hang the curtains. Add 12 inches to your measurement:
Curtain Height + 12 Inches = Splatter Curtain Height
The width of the curtain will stay the same.
  Step 1
Step 2

Cut the cloth to your measurements.
  Step 2
Step 3

Now you will need to measure 4 inches down from the top of your curtain.

Fold the top of the cloth down to touch the 4-inch measurement. Pin the edge. You will need to sew on this line to create the "pocket" where the curtain rod will go.
  Step 3
Step 4

Lay out your dropcloth or plastic outside. The side you splatter will be the "inside" of the curtain because it will face "inside" your room. The "outside" will be the side with the pocket seam (so you don't have to look at it).

Place the "inside" of the curtain up to begin splattering.
  Step 4
Step 5

Begin dipping your brush and splattering. Don't be afraid to get creative! Maybe your curtains need your handprints. When you are done, let the curtains dry.

Step 6

When they're completely dry, bring your curtains in. Then slide the rod through the pocket to hang.
