Modern Clock

It's time to make your own clock.
Materials:

You will need to work on this craft with an adult. Never handle a knife or drill without adult supervision.

12 wooden balls (we used a 1 1/2-inch size; you can also mix 'em up and use
various sizes: 1 inch, 1 1/2 inches, 2 inches)
3/4-inch-deep wooden circle for the clock base
wood dowel sticks (approx. 3/8-inch diameter)
clock kit for a 3/4-inch surface (includes clock motor and hour, minute and second hands)
wood glue
drill
matte knife or small wood saw
ruler
pencil
paints and brushes

Step by Step

  Materials
Step 1

Cut the dowel sticks with a matte knife or small wood saw into three sizes:
small, medium and large. You'll want to make four of each size to represent the hours of the day.

Get some help from an adult to drill a hole in each ball with a 3/8-inch drill bit (the same size as your dowel sticks). You should make the hole about 1/2 inch deep. For safety, use pliers or a clamp to grip the wood balls while drilling.
  Step 1
Step 2

Take the wooden circle and find the center. With a ruler and pencil divide the circle in half and in half again so that you have four equal pie pieces. Then divide each of those two more times until the circle is divided into 12 equal pie pieces. Draw lines around the side of the wooden circle, and use your 3/8-inch drill bit to drill holes about 3/4 inches deep around the side as well. You should have 12 holes when you're done. Drill a center hole for the clock motor to go through (check the instructions on the kit to determine the size of the hole).

Paint all the wood pieces. We recommend lots of different bright colors!

When the paint is dry, you are ready to put everything together.
  Step 2
Step 3

Put wood glue in the holes around the wooden circle and use the four large dowels to create the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock hours on the clock. Vary the small and medium dowels to complete the rest of the hours.
  Step 3
Step 4

Put a drop of glue in the hole of each ball and attach the balls to the outer ends of each dowel.
  Step 4
Step 4

Attach the clock motor and hands as directed by the instructions. Pop in a battery and it's time to hang your clock and show it off!
  Step 5
