Making No-Salt No-Fat No-Sugar Bagels

Materials
2 packages yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water; 110 degrees
4 - 4 1/2 cups unbleached white flour
1 egg white
1 1/2 tablespoons water
1 large bowl
1 small bowl
basting brush
cookie sheet
wooden stirring spoon
measuring cup

Step by Step

Step 1

Make Dough:
Combine yeast and water in a large bowl.
Add flour a little at a time.
Knead dough for 5 to 10 minutes. (Use an electric mixer only with adult supervision.)
Let dough stand for 30 minutes.

Shape Bagels:
Divide dough into 8 portions.
Roll each piece into a smooth ball and place on cookie sheet.
Punch a hole in center of dough and shape like a bagel.
Cover and let rise for 20 minutes.

Boil Bagels:
In a large pot, bring 1 gallon of water to a boil on the stove (you must have adult supervision). Add 3 bagels at a time and simmer for 5 minutes, turning once.
Drain.

Add Flavors:
Beat egg white and water together lightly.
Brush bagels with egg white and water glaze.
For variety, sprinkle bagels with onion or garlic bits or sesame or poppy seeds.

Bake:
Bake in preheated 375-degree oven for 30 minutes or until brown.

Step 6

Cool and Eat:
After having an adult remove the bagels from the oven, let them cool for 10 minutes.
Add your favorite spread and the bagels are ready to eat!
