What is a hybrid diesel locomotive?

A hybrid diesel locomotive combines the power of a diesel engine with electric generators and motors. It has a giant turbocharged 12-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine that weighs over 30,000 pounds (13,608 kilogram), heavy-duty electric motors and a generator that weighs 17,700 pounds (8,029 kg). There is another big engine and generator that provide electricity to the rest of the train, like for the air-conditioning and the lights. The locomotive also has powerful batteries to start the engine and run the electronics.

A diesel locomotive is very powerful and very fast, and it can carry heavy loads. It can travel at speeds of up to 110 miles per hour (177 kilometers per hour). It doesn't need a mechanical transmission like a car does. It can run at a steady speed because the electrical generator sends power to the wheels and there is no need for gear changes. A diesel engine is also more efficient than a gas engine, and it uses less fuel.
